STRENGTH: The Foundation of Fitness
At Richmond Hill Health Club, we recently hosted our second Foundation of Fitness workshop, where we explored the key pillars of staying fit. The session took a deeper look at how building strength is one of the most important foundational skills we can develop, as it supports every aspect of training – from stability and injury prevention to correct form and posture. It was great to see members actively involved in the discussion, exploring how they can better support their bodies and work safely and proactively towards their goals.
Throughout the year, we will continue to focus on the different elements of fitness, health and wellbeing, helping all members at Richmond Hill Health Club choose exercise routines, classes and positive habits that support healthier minds and bodies. Our team is here to support every member, and these free workshops are a valuable opportunity to learn directly from experienced fitness professionals.
Here’s an overview of what members took part in and what Dominik covered at the latest Foundation of Fitness workshop:
Why strength is the foundation of fitness
Building strength creates the base for improving every area of training. Members discovered how incorporating strength training into their routine can help maintain good form, improve stability and reduce the risk of injury.
Strength fundamentals (fitness components and movement patterns)
Members received practical guidance on how to safely and confidently introduce strength training into their routines, adapting movements to suit their individual goals and improve overall performance.
How strength supports other motor skills
Developing muscular strength helps support the whole body. Members learned how to build on their training to improve stability, move more freely with greater control and reduce the risk of injury.
How to measure strength
Members explored how to track progress by monitoring improvements in specific movements and training sessions over time. This is particularly important for older adults, where maintaining mobility is essential.
How to add strength to your workout
The session highlighted specific exercises, strength machines and classes available at Richmond Hill Health Club that can be easily incorporated into a regular training routine.
Injury prevention
Safe practice is essential in all forms of training. Members learned how to approach strength training with confidence and how it can support safer, more effective exercise.
Myths
Members discussed common misconceptions around strength training, helping to challenge unhelpful or misleading ideas and make strength training more accessible to everyone.
Anatomy quiz
The workshop concluded with a fun anatomy quiz, giving members the chance to test their knowledge while reinforcing what they had learned throughout the session.
