What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha Flow Yoga is a class for mixed ability members, challenging but with options for all yoga journeys. Learn pranayama breath work and yoga techniques to guide you through mindful and calming sequences. Hatha yoga is designed to align and build awareness of your body, promote mindfulness, and awaken the spirit. The postures are also designed to open the channels of the body, particularly the spine, so that vital energy can flow freely. In our physical bodies, we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We also learn to balance our effort and surrender in each pose from the Sanskrit words "Ha" meaning sun and "Tha" meaning moon, the balance of opposing energies.

What are the benefits of Hatha Yoga?

PHYSICAL

  • Strengthens the core and stabilises multiple muscle groups.
  • Increases control of balance and coordination.
  • Consistent practice improves flexibility and joint mobility through holding and stabilising asanas (postures).
  • Low-risk, low-impact movements help increase mobility and reduce strain on joints.
  • Gently builds and tones the entire body without overexertion or too much muscle fatigue.
  • It supports healthy posture through learning proper alignment and body awareness, even from the most subtle body movements.

Mental

  • Teaches deep and intentional breathing exercises, which result in mental calm and relaxation.
  • Reduces stress through movement and the release of happy hormones like endorphins.
  • Increasing the heart rate and getting regular exercise helps improve circulation, which results in better sleep and rest periods.
  • With consistent dedication to yoga, you will develop self-discipline and routine, supporting emotional balance and resilience.
  • Helps to release tension and is a powerful form of self-care through practising meditation.

FAQS

  • Absolutely. Our Hatha Flow class is purposefully designed to cater for all yoga abilities. It helps that Hatha Flow is slower and uses gentle movements, and is often praised for being suitable for bodies as they age. However, it may be helpful to begin with our Foundation Yoga first to build an understanding of the world of yoga through basic poses and linked breathing techniques.

  • Being consistent is the key to achieving full benefits from your yoga practice. Regular, balanced practice 1-3 times a week is a popular schedule alongside other forms of exercise like cardio and weight training.

  • We recommend wearing loose, breathable clothes that allow for a full range of movement. Yoga is a very stretchy and fluid form of exercise, so you should be unrestricted.

  • Hatha Flow Yoga is more slow-paced than Vinyasa and focuses a little more on the holding of positions and breathing through them. The flowing style of Vinyasa emphasises the connection between poses and transition through sequences.

  • Yes, Hatha Flow Yoga is gentle on the joints and reduces the likelihood of muscle strain and joint pain as it is not intense. Hatha Flow is intentionally slower and calmer, unlike other low-impact exercises like Pilates classes.
